There’s much more to Barry than just Gavin and Stacey! Barry is the largest town in Wales, rich with development, filled with stunning natural coastlines, and many historical landmarks to boot. But that’s not all. Barry is home to a group of men whose mission is to support local charities and individuals, making an enormous difference to the lives of Barry residents every year.

Introducing Matt Davies and the Barry Round Table – aka the White Knights of Barry!

Here at Peter Alan we love nothing more than to celebrate our unsung community heroes of South Wales. In the most recent edition of our Distinctive Magazine we shine our spotlight on the Barry Round Table, a group of a dozen men aged 18-45 who spend their free time getting out into the community, spreading joy, and raising money for local charities. By day, Matt Davies lives in Barry with his fiancée, and works full time for Legal & General in Cardiff.

Evenings and weekends, Matt and the other Round Table members are busy planning and hosting charity fundraising activities to give donations and support back into the Barry community. Matt has given 10 sterling years of service to the Barry Round Table.

“Everyone has their own individual reasons as to why they want to be a part of it. We all have a laugh and don’t take ourselves too seriously! All funds raised get donated and we put it all back into the community.”

In 2022, Barry Round Table celebrated 50 years of the Barry Santa Sleigh making memories in the town. Created simply as a way to spread Christmas cheer, the sleigh soon became a fundraising drive after members of the public asked how they could donate to the cause.  This is the charity’s biggest fundraiser of the year which now has 18 routes, and is loved by families across Barry!

Santa’s Wish is another popular Christmas fundraiser where up to 20 local groups have the opportunity to ask for items or equipment valued up to £50 to help them kick start their new year. This allows the charity to give back to lots of smaller organisations in the community who need their help.

Always looking to support every member of the Barry community, each year the Barry Round Table hosts the Elderly Person Dinner. This 2 day event invites elderly residents who are feeling lonely at Christmas to come and enjoy a meal in great company, and have a bit of a festive knees up! The Round Table members go and collect the residents from their home, making sure it’s an event that is accessible to everyone “Christmas is our busiest time. As Round Table members we overcommit our time, but we love it!”

Outside of Christmas, the Barry Round Table has been involved in a number of great causes this year:

Warm Spaces

The Barry Round Table has been raising donations and working alongside Barry Rugby Club, supporting residents during the cost-of-living crisis by offering a warm and inviting place to come together at no cost.

Tŷ Hapus Respite Centre

This old Round Table house has been converted into a respite centre for relatives with dementia. The Round Table team put forward their community spirit into helping to clear out the garden, put up some fencing to create an enclosed space for the residents, and added a canopy in the garden to create a shaded relaxation area for when the summer weather hits.

Kids Day Out

The Barry Round Table have invited local community groups to nominate 50 kids to be rewarded with a free fun day out. They will be taken to Llangrannog for an action-packed day of zip lines, high ropes and all things both equally terrifying and exhilarating!

Local Events

You’re also likely to catch the Barry Round Table guys at various local events around the town this summer with their Nerf Gun Challenge! Highest score wins. All proceeds go to local causes, plus you’re guaranteed to have a right laugh!
